Amka Safaris

Two Treks, Two Forests.

For travellers who want more than a single hour with the gorillas, this itinerary builds in two separate treks in two different sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, bracketed by golden monkeys at Mgahinga and open water at Lake Bunyonyi.

The pace is measured rather than rushed: each trek is given its own rest day either side, and the route stays within the compact south-western circuit rather than covering the whole country.

How It Unfolds.

/01

Entebbe to Lake Mburo

The road south-west from Entebbe crosses the equator at Kayabwe before reaching Lake Mburo National Park, where an afternoon game drive covers open acacia woodland grazed by zebra, impala and eland.

/02

Lake Mburo to Bwindi (Buhoma)

A long drive continues south-west through Mbarara and Kabale to Buhoma, on Bwindi’s northern edge. The forest wall rises directly behind the lodges here, and the change in altitude and vegetation is immediate.

/03

Gorilla Trekking, Buhoma

The first of two treks follows a habituated family through Buhoma’s steep, humid forest. Guides track the group by signs left from the previous night’s nesting site, and the hour spent with them once found is unhurried.

/04

Buhoma to Ruhija

A shorter transfer over forest roads brings you to Ruhija, Bwindi’s highest sector, known for its birdlife and cooler air. The afternoon is free for a nature walk or rest ahead of the second trek.

/05

Gorilla Trekking, Ruhija

The second trek departs from Ruhija’s ranger station into terrain generally steeper than Buhoma’s. Different gorilla families hold territory here, so the day brings a distinct group and a different forest character to the first encounter.

/06

Ruhija to Mgahinga

The drive south to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park passes through Kisoro’s terraced hillsides, with the volcanic cones of the Virunga range visible for much of the approach.

/07

Golden Monkey Trekking and Lake Bunyonyi

A morning trek follows golden monkeys through Mgahinga’s bamboo zone, after which the drive to Lake Bunyonyi takes under an hour. The afternoon is left open for a canoe trip across the lake’s still water.

/08

Departure

A flight from Kihihi or a drive back towards Entebbe closes the itinerary, retracing the route north through the hills of the south-west.
